Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes, Jeroboam - Avril

300 IB 0 1 - 255
Tasting Notes for Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes, Jeroboam - Avril, 2000:
The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. The Wine Advocate, #145 Feb-03.

d'Armailhac, Jeroboam

500 IB 1 0 520 -
Tasting Notes for d'Armailhac, Jeroboam, 2000:
This continues to be one of the most seductive and luscious d'Armailhacs I have ever tasted. It may be my favorite vintage of d'Armailhac. Opaque purple-colored, this blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot has surprisingly good acidity with the high Merlot content and high tannin, but an expressive, opulent mid-texture and loads of charcoal-infused, cedary, black currant fruit intermixed with spice box, dried herbs, and espresso notes. The wine is full-bodied, sweet, and expansive. Wine Advocate # 146 Apr 2003

Cos Labory

75 DP 1 0 520 -
Tasting Notes for Cos Labory, 2000:
Herbal, washed-out cherry and black currant notes with some dusty earth are found in this somewhat uninspiring, still moderately tannic wine, which seems to be drying out and going nowhere fast.

La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion

75 IB 1 0 1000 -
Tasting Notes for La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion, 2000:
The 2000 La Chapelle de la Mission is surprisingly fat, juicy, and succulent, offering notes of roasted herbs, tobacco, black cherry and cassis fruit, scorched earth, and asphalt. This luscious second wine can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years. Wine Advocate # 146 Apr 2003

La Gomerie

75 DP 0 6 - 100
Tasting Notes for La Gomerie, 2000:
A prodigious effort, the dense purple-colored 2000 La Gomerie boasts spectacular aromas of roasted coffee, sweet, jammy black cherry and currant fruit, more tannin than normal, but a sumptuous, thick, expansive, juicy mid-section as well as finish. This terrific offering is made in a modern, cultish style aimed at unabashed hedonists. Robert Parker Wine Advocate April 2003

Malescot St Exupery

75 IB 1 0 850 -
Tasting Notes for Malescot St Exupery, 2000:
This estate, which has continued to impress me in recent years, hit a home run in 2000. Showing slightly better than I rated it previously, this wine is deep bluish/purple with some lightening at the edge, and its floral nose displays notes of melted licorice, crushed rock, blueberries and black raspberries. A wine of extraordinary balance, equilibrium, and purity, with supple tannins, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated effort is already compelling and has hit its window of full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years.

Pavie

75 IB 3 0 5300 -
Tasting Notes for Pavie, 2000:
This 92-acre vineyard, which enjoys an impeccable southern orientation, is composed of limestone on the upper slopes, clay and limestone in the middle, and sand and clay at the base. Proprietor Gerard Perse, who has done a brilliant job since acquiring the estate in 1998, continues to push the envelope of quality to higher and higher heights. Planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes receive kid glove treatment with hand-harvesting into small plastic lugs, two triage tables, and aging for 28 months in 100% new oak that is purchased in advance, then air-dried and coopered according to Perse’s specifications. In short, the man is a perfectionist, and the quality of all the estates he owns has soared dramatically. The 2003 Pavie (7,080 cases; 13.5% alcohol) is closest in style to the 2000, but slightly more evolved and exotic. Its dense plum/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso roast, and blackberries. The wine, which hits the palate with a dramatic minerality, comes across like a hypothetical blend of limestone liqueur intermixed with black and red fruits. With massive depth, richness, and body, this tannic 2003 should be forgotten for 4-5 years, then enjoyed over the next four decades. The integration of acidity, tannin, and wood is flawless, and the wine is incredibly pure, rich, and intense. Kudos to Gerard Perse, who is trying, in a more modern fashion, to recreate the glories of such ancient Bordeaux vintages as 1921, 1929, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1959, and 1961. From my perspective, he comes as close to that goal as anyone in Bordeaux. Wine Advocate # 164 Apr 2006

Le Pin ( owc 6-pack )

75 DP 0 6 - 3334
Tasting Notes for Le Pin ( owc 6-pack ) , 2000:
Exotic, opulent, extravagant, and impossible to resist, the 2000 Le Pin is an explosive, virtually perfect example of this estate. Dense purple-colored, with luxurious levels of extract and richness, this intense, unctuously-textured, black fruit-filled Pomerol is thick enough to drink with a spoon. Revealing abundant tannin and definition for such a young Le Pin, it is typical of many of the blockbuster, but backward and tannic 2000 Pomerols. It is a great wine for multi-millionaires who are able to latch onto a few bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. The Wine Advocate, #146 Apr-03.

Pensees de Lafleur

75 IB 1 0 1500 -
Tasting Notes for Pensees de Lafleur, 2000:
Lafleur's second wine, the 2000 Pensees de Lafleur, offers notes of chocolate (a characteristic I have never detected in the grand vin), medium to full body, huge concentration, and a rich, textured, muscular style. Very impressive, but different, it requires 4-5 years of cellaring, and should last for 15+. Wine Advocate # 139 Feb 2002

Mouton Rothschild

75 IB 0 1 - 1450
Tasting Notes for Mouton Rothschild, 2000:
The 2000 Mouton Rothschild is at its best with about 24-48 hours of decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, the wine offers a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to reticent but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy, and backward, with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak, it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and backward. Twenty-four to 48 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. It is not as expressive as the other first-growth Medocs, but give it time. As I predicted in my first report on the millennium vintage (April, 2001), Philippine de Rothschild could be expected to do something special with her presentation of 2000. She has exceeded everyone's expectations with a work of art. Those who have seen the extraordinary packaging of the 2000 Mouton Rothschild must certainly realize this is a brilliant achievement. The bottle is extraordinary, and likely to have nearly as much value empty as full! Her genius is obvious, but it's what's inside that counts! Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+. The Wine Advocate, #146 Apr-03.
