Calon Segur
The northern-most classified growth in the Medoc, Calon Segur is a St. Estephe property of third-growth status. Production is around 20,000 cases from average age vines of over 38 years. Comprising of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot, the wine is aged in oak barrel for 24-26 months. Calon Segur’s famous heart label is reported to have arrived from a comment made by the former owner, Marquis Alexandre se Segur, who also owned Lafite, Latour and Mouton – ‘I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon’.

Tasting Notes: This great St.-Estephe estate has turned out a succession of brilliant wines. The 2005, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, has put on weight over the last year. An opaque ruby/purple hue is accompanied by a sweet nose of earth, smoke, cassis, and cherries as well as a textured, full-bodied mouthfeel. While the tannin is high, there is beautifully sweet fruit underlying the wineÕs structure. It will require 8-10 years of cellaring after release, and should drink well for three decades. The Wine Advocate #170 Apr-07. Parker Points: 92 Drinking Period: 2015-2037 |

Tasting Notes: This classically-styled claret did not merit an outstanding rating because it lacks sufficient concentration to compete with the estateÕs top vintages. However, it offers a dark ruby/plum color, nicely evolved notes of roasted herbs, sweet cherries and currants, and loamy earth, medium-weight, light to moderate tannin, and an elegant style. If it puts on weight over the next few years, it may deserve a slightly higher score. Anticipated maturity: now-2018. The Wine Advocate #171 Jun-07. Parker Points: 89 Drinking Period: 2007-2018 |

Tasting Notes: This supple 1999 is an elegant, lighter-styled Calon-Segur, particularly when compared to the 2000. It exhibits an evolved color, sweet cherry and dusty berry fruit, and hints of dried herbs. It is a spicy, cherry-flavored effort with a style reminiscent of a Beaune premier cru. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a wine of elegance and finesse rather than one with a lot of stuffing and power. Drink it during its first 7-10 years of life. Wine Advocate #140 (Apr 2002) Parker Points: 87 Drinking Period: 2002-2012 |

Tasting Notes: 92 points. The 1996 may not be as profound as I had predicted from cask, but it is an exceptional wine. Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. This classic, medium to full-bodied, traditionally made wine improves dramatically with airing, suggesting it will have a very long life. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2028. Wine Advocate 4/99.
