The original vineyard consisted of just one hectare of vines within sight of Petrus, the traditional holder of the crown in Pomerol. This gentle, south-facing slope of gravel and sand, with about 10 per cent clay, was bought for a million French francs in 1979 by three members of the Thienpont family, Belgian negociants, who also own nearby Vieux-Chateau-Certan in Pomerol. Average production is 500-600 cases. These oaky wines are very full-bodied, powerfully aromatic with a sensational spicy-cassis flavour dominated by a decadently rich, creamy-toffee, toasty-coffee oak. The vineyard may be tiny, but Le Pin makes an extraordinary wine.

Le Pin

75 IB   6 - 850
Tasting Notes:
This micro-cuvee of 500-600 cases of 100% Merlot offers exotic pain grille notes interwoven with lavish quantities of black, blue, and red fruits, an unctuous texture, and beautiful purity as well as length. Full-bodied with velvety tannins as well as extravagant fruit, it should drink well for 20-25 years. Sadly, most consumers can neither afford nor find this stunning Pomerol. Le Pin

75 IB   3 - 885
Tasting Notes:
Exotic, as it often can be, with super-ripe mulberry and black cherry fruit to the point of near-kirsch liqueur, with notes of licorice, truffle, and forest floor, this is a full-bodied, concentrated wine with a slight tannic bite to the finish. There is good freshness, depth, and power, and despite the flamboyant aromatics, this wine needs a good 3-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15 or more years.

Le Pin, Double Magnums

300 IB   1 - 6500
Tasting Notes:
This exotic effort tends to perform incredibly well when young, middle aged, and old, and all the complaints heard when it is first released that it wonÕt age well have been proven absurd. The 2005's incredibly fragrant perfume of espresso roast, melted chocolate, cedar, plums, and kirsch soars from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored Pomerol. Opulent, even voluptuous, and loaded, it boasts an expansive, full-bodied palate yet good underlying acidity provides definition as well as precision to this blockbuster. Sadly, only 500 cases are produced each year, and those are gobbled up by the worldÕs billionaires. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025. The Wine Advocate #170 Apr-07.

Le Pin

75 IB 2   9600 -
Tasting Notes:
There are 580 cases of the exotic, flamboyant 2004 Le Pin. Its dense plum/ruby color is accompanied by sweet aromas of kirsch, cassis, smoke, earth, and roasted herbs. Super-opulent for the vintage, it possesses wonderful fruit and glycerin, medium to full body, and a fleshy personality. It should drink well young, yet age nicely for two decades or more. The Pomerol of the vintage? The Wine Advocate #171 Jun-07.

Le Pin

75 IB   6 - 2500
Tasting Notes:
Exotic, opulent, extravagant, and impossible to resist, the 2000 Le Pin is an explosive, virtually perfect example of this estate. Dense purple-colored, with luxurious levels of extract and richness, this intense, unctuously-textured, black fruit-filled Pomerol is thick enough to drink with a spoon. Revealing abundant tannin and definition for such a young Le Pin, it is typical of many of the blockbuster, but backward and tannic 2000 Pomerols. It is a great wine for multi-millionaires who are able to latch onto a few bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. The Wine Advocate, #146 Apr-03.

Le Pin

75 DP   3 - 1650
Tasting Notes:
A beautifully made, dark ruby/garnet/plum-colored wine, the 1998 Le Pin offers an exotic bouquet of coconut, kirsch liqueur, and jammy blackberries, all flamboyantly dosed with smoky new oak. It is dense, rich, and plush, with a good tannic framework. At one time, Le Pin was the most exotic wine from Bordeaux's right bank, but there is now considerable competition from all the new St.-Emilion upstarts. While this remains an outstanding, often compelling Pomerol, many far less expensive, equally prodigious alternatives have emerged. Wine Advocate #134 April 2001
