The original vineyard consisted of just one hectare of vines within sight of Petrus, the traditional holder of the crown in Pomerol. This gentle, south-facing slope of gravel and sand, with about 10 per cent clay, was bought for a million French francs in 1979 by three members of the Thienpont family, Belgian negociants, who also own nearby Vieux-Chateau-Certan in Pomerol. Average production is 500-600 cases. These oaky wines are very full-bodied, powerfully aromatic with a sensational spicy-cassis flavour dominated by a decadently rich, creamy-toffee, toasty-coffee oak. The vineyard may be tiny, but Le Pin makes an extraordinary wine.

2005

Le Pin

75 IB   1 - 2000
Tasting Notes:
This exotic effort tends to perform incredibly well when young, middle aged, and old, and all the complaints heard when it is first released that it wonÕt age well have been proven absurd. The 2005's incredibly fragrant perfume of espresso roast, melted chocolate, cedar, plums, and kirsch soars from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored Pomerol. Opulent, even voluptuous, and loaded, it boasts an expansive, full-bodied palate yet good underlying acidity provides definition as well as precision to this blockbuster. Sadly, only 500 cases are produced each year, and those are gobbled up by the worldÕs billionaires. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025. The Wine Advocate #170 Apr-07.

Le Pin

75 IB 1   8400 -
Tasting Notes:
There are 580 cases of the exotic, flamboyant 2004 Le Pin. Its dense plum/ruby color is accompanied by sweet aromas of kirsch, cassis, smoke, earth, and roasted herbs. Super-opulent for the vintage, it possesses wonderful fruit and glycerin, medium to full body, and a fleshy personality. It should drink well young, yet age nicely for two decades or more. The Pomerol of the vintage? The Wine Advocate #171 Jun-07.

1989

Le Pin

75 DP   5 - 915
Tasting Notes:
The 1989's dark ruby/purple color may have slightly more saturation than the 1990. The wine reveals a sweet, roasted herb, coconut, and jammy black currant-scented nose with plenty of smoky new oak. Full-bodied, with massive concentration, huge layers of glycerin, and more noticeable tannin than is found in the 1990, this is a fabulous and fascinating wine, as well as one of extraordinary singularity. It is unquestionably a compelling wine. But is it worth the $4000-$6000 a bottle that top vintages of Le Pin were fetching at auctions in late 1997. Le Pin

75 DP   10 - 895
Tasting Notes:
The 1986 offers up an extraordinary nose of smoky oak and plummy fruit. Concentrated and powerful, with abundant tannins, this may be the most structured Le Pin yet made. Medium to full-bodied, firm yet rich and expansive, this wine will benefit from another year or two in the cellar. Robert Parker- Wine Advocate
