Le Pin
The original vineyard consisted of just one hectare of vines within sight of Petrus, the traditional holder of the crown in Pomerol. This gentle, south-facing slope of gravel and sand, with about 10 per cent clay, was bought for a million French francs in 1979 by three members of the Thienpont family, Belgian negociants, who also own nearby Vieux-Chateau-Certan in Pomerol. Average production is 500-600 cases. These oaky wines are very full-bodied, powerfully aromatic with a sensational spicy-cassis flavour dominated by a decadently rich, creamy-toffee, toasty-coffee oak. The vineyard may be tiny, but Le Pin makes an extraordinary wine.

Tasting Notes: A great classic, the 2009 Le Pin (100% Merlot) displays unreal density and a profound flavor profile, but also reveals good structure and elegance. Even though it is aged in 100% new oak, no wood is detectable, which is a tip off to what we are dealing with in the most extraordinary 2009s. The oak and tannins are often totally unnoticeable because of the sheer magnitude and mass of fruit and glycerin. This 2009, made in the style of the 1982, should drink well for 25 or more years. Tasting Notes: This is among the most profound Le Pins made to date. The wine exhibits a dense, dark ruby/plum color, a spectacular, hedonistic aromatic profile consisting of exotic spices, jammy kirsch and other black fruits intermixed with lavish quantities of pain grille. On the palate, the wine is a velvety-textured fruit bomb with layers of concentration, fabulous ripeness, copious glycerin, and well-integrated sweet tannin. It is a decadently rich, voluptuously-textured, full-bodied wine that is impossible to resist, even though it is still an infant in terms of development.. Last tasted 12/96. Tasting Notes: This wine went through an unusual stage where it seemed disjointed, too oaky, and light, but that has all changed over the last 1-2 years. The wine is now a deep plum color with some lightening at the edge. The nose soars from the glass offering up an enticing fragrance of smoked herbs, sweet, jammy, curranty fruit, and toasty oak. In the mouth, caramel, toffee, and mocha blend with jammy cherry fruit to offer an unctuously-textured, thick, satiny smooth wine that is impossible to resist.
