D'Yquem
History shows us that Yquem has been around since 1593 and this great Sauterne name has not waivered since. Perfect location with its own microclimate and a fantastic drainage system, this sweet elixir can live on for 75 years and more. Dedicated work in the vineyard and at selection, Yquem broadly boasts of producing one glass per vine! Due to its rich, opulent sweetness Yquem has unbelievable ageing potential, often needing at least 15 years to show its best. 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc come from vines of 30 years, with yields of 8 hectoliters per hectare. A dry white ‘Y’ is also produced.

Tasting Notes: There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nut-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. Tasting Notes: A sensational Yquem, 1997 may be this estate's finest effort since 1990 (although I would not discount the 1996 turning out to be nearly as good). The 1997's light gold color is accompanied a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin, it looks to be a great vintage for this renowned Sauternes estate. Tasting Notes: 1990: An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Wine Advocate #122 (Apr 1999). Parker Points: 99 Drinking Period: 2003-2050 |

Tasting Notes: The 1976 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit, pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and overripe melons? This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality. It is one of the few true great vintages of Yquem that can actually be drunk with tremendous pleasure at such a young age. Eighty percent of the harvest made it into the final wine. Tasting Notes: This is an outstanding Yquem, but I have been plagued by bad bottles in tastings, which I hope is only attributable to poor storage and handling. The top bottles exhibit plenty of ripe, concentrated tropical fruit and botrytis. Full bodied, deep golden in color, with a spicy, caramel, toasted roti, fat flavor, this big, rich wine is developing quickly for an Yquem. Although irrefutably outstanding, this may be a slightly overrated vintage for Yquem. Robert Parker Wine Advocate Parker Points: 92 Drinking Period: 1990-2010 |

Tasting Notes: Based solely on the strength of what is unquestionably a great Yquem, many have concluded that 1967 was a superb vintage for Sauternes. The truth is that 1967 was a very good but irregular vintage. As for Yquem, it is close to perfection. Medium amber/golden with a full intensity bouquet of vanillin spice, honey, ripe pineapples, and coconut, this intense, very ripe, unctuous Yquem has layers of sweet, opulent fruit, excellent balance, and a hefty, powerful finish. Almost too big and rich to be served with food, this wine should be drunk alone as a dessert. From the point of view of this wine's evolution, it has hardly budged in the last six years.
