Le Pin

The original vineyard consisted of just one hectare of vines within sight of Petrus, the traditional holder of the crown in Pomerol. This gentle, south-facing slope of gravel and sand, with about 10 per cent clay, was bought for a million French francs in 1979 by three members of the Thienpont family, Belgian negociants, who also own nearby Vieux-Chateau-Certan in Pomerol. Average production is 500-600 cases. These oaky wines are very full-bodied, powerfully aromatic with a sensational spicy-cassis flavour dominated by a decadently rich, creamy-toffee, toasty-coffee oak. The vineyard may be tiny, but Le Pin makes an extraordinary wine.
