2008 Burgundy

Please find below Seckford Wines' offer of 2008 Burgundy from two highly-regarded young wine makers.

Seckford is celebrating its 10th vintage partnership with Jean-Marie Fourrier (in Gevrey-Chambertin) and I am delighted to introduce Virgile Lignier (from Morey-Saint-Denis). Both men are producing lovely, pure wines that are distinguished by their fruit and fragrance.

2008 is a vintage marked at the best Domaines by an impressive purity of fruit with rapier-like, but balancing, acidity and a harvest reduced by 30%. This means the wines can also be quite concentrated. Many commentators have compared the vintage favourably to 2001 and even 1996; however 2008 stands alone. It started out as an "ugly duckling" vintage, but it was saved by an Indian summer. The 2008s will make lovely mid-term drinking, something to tuck into whilst waiting for the best 2005 and 2006 wines.

Domaine Lignier Michelot, Morey-Saint-Denis

2008 Morey Saint Denis ‘En la Rue de Vergy' ~ £219 (£250 per 6 mags)
Situated above Clos de Tart and Bonnes Mares. Super depth and concentration here, silky and ripe on the palate. Crunchy fruit with vibrant acidity, this is very pure. Delicious fragrant finish that handles the new oak element very well.

2008 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Faconnières ~ £310 (£350 per 6 mags)
Situated below Clos St Denis. Rich and vinous on the nose. Wonderful acidity and fruit. This wine is right up my street, powerful and well-balanced. Ripe red fruits. Lovely. Vinous.

2008 Morey Saint Denis 1er cru Aux Charmes ~ £310 (£350 per 6 mags)
Situated below Clos de la Roche and next to Mazoyères-Chambertin. Sweet, sweet, sweet. Lovely ripe tannins, this wine finished the malolactic fermentation in February 2009 - early for a 2008 wine and so tastes more complete, more rounded than many others. More flesh too than the Faconnières, which is a little bit more gamey.

2008 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Cuvée Jules ~ £310
Named for one of his children, this is a blend of wines from the premier cru vineyards Sentiers (on the Morey side of the village below Bonnes Mares) and Carrières (a small premier cru in the middle of the village). Much more perfumed on the nose than any Morey wine. Silky smooth and delicious without the rusticity sometimes associated with Chambolle. Redolent of Christmas cake and orange peel on the finish.

2008 Clos de la Roche ~ £615 (£275 per jero)
Wine made from 80% domaine grapes, 20% bought in. Damson nose, rich and grapey. Real depth and power - this is Faconnières plus plus plus. Really lovely, attractive sweet fruit, the hallmark ‘crunchy' character of the vintage with an astonishing length. Beautifully balanced it handles the acidity of the vintage well and is very moreish.
