Sassicaia is the trail-blazing central Italian wine made, largely from Cabernet Sauvignon, originally by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta at the Tenuta San Guido near Bolgheri and one of the first Italian reds made in the image of fine red bordeaux. The first small commercial quantities were released in the mid 1970s.
Sassicaia kick-started the shake-up of Italy's antediluvian wine laws. It also became the first ever Italian estate to have its own estate DOC in 1994. And, just for good measure, it effectively transformed Bolgheri into what many believe is the country's most exciting and dynamic fine wine region.
Sassicaia is a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) grapes from the vineyards which are situated on hilly slopes in a sub zone of Bolgheri.
