Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 IB 0 1 - 145
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1979:
The 1979 has always reminded me of an Italian Barolo with its melted asphalt, soy, tobacco, and earthy personality. It is medium to full-bodied, somewhat sinewy and tannic, but vibrant, dense, and chewy. Although not the most complex Beaucastel, it is still vigorous and alive. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1983:
An example that possessed considerable brett from its inception, as well as plenty of beefy, sweaty horse smells is the 1983. This effort, while slightly in decline, still offers impressive aromatics (if you like your reds meaty and kinky), but the tannin is beginning to poke through at the back of the mouth. Rich and medium to full-bodied, the 1983 is undoubtedly spectacular out of larger formats, but from regular bottles, it is beginning to show some fatigue, even from my cold cellar. Drink it up. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 DP 0 2 - 60
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1986:
Last Tasted 11/91 This is one of the least distinguished Beaucastels of the last twenty years. A damp, earthy, cedary, spicy nose is followed by a hollow wine with high tannins, and a shortage of fruit and richness. The finish is all toughness. The overall impression is one of an angular, unpleasant style of wine. I felt as though I had a piece of tree bark in my mouth when I tasted it. It is doubtful that age will help. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2005. The Wine Advocate, #80 Apr-92.

75 DP 0 3 - 175
Tasting Notes for Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes - Avril, 1990:
From a fabulous vintage, the 1990 is one of the greatest offerings from Clos des Papes. This was the last vintage vinified with 100% stems, and the result is a full-bodied, opulent, sweet, multidimensional, expansive Chateauneuf du Pape. It has hit its plateau of maturity, where it should rest for 10-15 years. Terrific! eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 DP 0 2 - 55
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1992:
Sadly, the only two bottles purchased of this wine had to be opened and both were cooked. They revealed no signs of heat damage, with good fills and no protruding corks or stained labels, and they had been resting comfortably in my cold cellar since I purchased them. However, the wine tasted hollow, with tar like aromas, an absence of fruit, and a baked character. I will report on this wine again once I have had a chance to purchase several more bottles. The 1992 Beaucastel was one of the best wines of an average-quality vintage in Chateauneuf du Pape, so it is distressing to see that along the route from Avignon to America someone negligently fried the wine. Last tasted 1/96. Rhone Book, #B3 Jan-97.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 DP 0 1 - 49
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1993:
When I tasted the 1993 Beaucastel in Chateauneuf du Pape, the wine was far more showy, flashy, and open-knit than bottles tasted stateside, admittedly right after reaching these shores. I backed off my initial high rating a bit and added the question mark because of how tannic, backward, and firm the wine showed on two separate occasions from a case I purchased. It certainly possesses a dense color, as well as plenty of body and intensity. However, the rich, sweet, open-knit bouquet has gone into hibernation, leaving a tightly knit wine that is frozen in place, reluctantly offering up aromas of black fruits and smoke. Tannic, austere, and more in step with the 1988, this appears to be a vintage that will require more initial cellaring than I had anticipated. It will be interesting to retaste this wine after it has had 4-6 months of rest on these shores. Last tasted 11/96. Rhone Book, #B3 Jan-97.

Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin - Perrin

75 DP 0 1 - 195
Tasting Notes for Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin - Perrin, 1994:
The 1994 is the odd man out in this mini-vertical, revealing an animal-styled personality with notes of beef blood, animal fur, wet dog, mushrooms, tree bark, licorice, spice, black currants, and cherries. Medium to full-bodied and rich, but slightly awkward compared to its siblings, it should be drinkable between 2006-2020. Hindsight suggests this might not have been a vintage in which to produce a Jacques Perrin. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.
