Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 IB 0 1 - 145
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1979:
The 1979 has always reminded me of an Italian Barolo with its melted asphalt, soy, tobacco, and earthy personality. It is medium to full-bodied, somewhat sinewy and tannic, but vibrant, dense, and chewy. Although not the most complex Beaucastel, it is still vigorous and alive. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 DP 0 1 - 49
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1993:
When I tasted the 1993 Beaucastel in Chateauneuf du Pape, the wine was far more showy, flashy, and open-knit than bottles tasted stateside, admittedly right after reaching these shores. I backed off my initial high rating a bit and added the question mark because of how tannic, backward, and firm the wine showed on two separate occasions from a case I purchased. It certainly possesses a dense color, as well as plenty of body and intensity. However, the rich, sweet, open-knit bouquet has gone into hibernation, leaving a tightly knit wine that is frozen in place, reluctantly offering up aromas of black fruits and smoke. Tannic, austere, and more in step with the 1988, this appears to be a vintage that will require more initial cellaring than I had anticipated. It will be interesting to retaste this wine after it has had 4-6 months of rest on these shores. Last tasted 11/96. Rhone Book, #B3 Jan-97.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1983:
An example that possessed considerable brett from its inception, as well as plenty of beefy, sweaty horse smells is the 1983. This effort, while slightly in decline, still offers impressive aromatics (if you like your reds meaty and kinky), but the tannin is beginning to poke through at the back of the mouth. Rich and medium to full-bodied, the 1983 is undoubtedly spectacular out of larger formats, but from regular bottles, it is beginning to show some fatigue, even from my cold cellar. Drink it up. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin

75 DP 0 1 - 85
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel - Perrin, 1985:
One of the most charming Beaucastels since it was first bottled (and still holding on today), is the gorgeous 1985. Its medium ruby color reveals considerable amber/pink at the edge. This offering demonstrates that a wine does not need a lot of tannin and power to age well; itŐs all about balance. Velvety-textured, opulent, sweet, and appealing, this remains a classic Beaucastel. eRobertParker.com, #E2003 Jan-03.

Ch de Beaucastel ( owc 6-pack ) - Perrin

75 DP 0 6 - 50
Tasting Notes for Ch de Beaucastel ( owc 6-pack ) - Perrin, 2001:
Beaucastel has been on a terrific qualitative roll over the last four vintages, and the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (which Francois Perrin feels is similar to the 1990, although I donŐt see that as of yet) is a 15,000-case blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. The Wine Advocate, #151 Feb-04.

Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes - Avril

75 DP 0 3 - 35
Tasting Notes for Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes - Avril, 1997:
The 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape may be a touch light and short in the finish. The wine's deep ruby color is followed by aromas of cherry jam, intermixed with pepper, pine, and earth. In the mouth, cassis/blackberry fruit (no doubt from the Mourvedre and Syrah components) makes an appearance. This soft, low acid, medium-bodied, seductive offering should drink well for 5-8 years. Paul Avril, one of the stars of this appellation, has performed well in this light-styled vintage. The wine is a sexy example with significant density and richness. The Wine Advocate, #121 Feb-99.

Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes, Jeroboam - Avril

300 IB 0 1 - 315
Tasting Notes for Chateauneuf du Pape Clos des Papes, Jeroboam - Avril, 2005:
The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape (15.3% alcohol) has a deeper color than the 2004 and 2003 that I tasted side by side, and with its dense ruby/purple color to the rim, the wine has a fabulous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, licorice, and a combination of spice and Provencal herbs. It is rich, full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, good acidity, and a blockbuster finish of close to 45+ seconds. This is a knock-out wine that will probably need 4-5 years of bottle age and last for 20-25 years. This exquisitely run estate continues to turn out wines of great fragrance, richness as well as flavor authority and integrity. The yields are always among the lowest in the appellation. While they have 87 acres and can produce as much as 8,000 cases of Chateauneuf du Pape, the yields in 2003 were 23 hectoliters per hectare, in 2004, 22 hectoliters per hectare, and in 2005, 21 hectoliters per hectare. Their best value, and itŐs one heck of a bistro wine, is the non-vintage concoction of Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, and Carignan actually cropped at an amazingly low 32 hectoliters per hectare.
