Vina Arana Gran Reserva

2014 La Rioja Alta

We are delighted to offer Vina Arana Gran Reserva 2014 - first released in August, this is a welcome reminder that the wine will be shipped to Seckford at the end of the year. Arana 2014 has now been scored with a pair of 96 points: from James Suckling and in Decanter magazine.

This only the second release of this wine. All of the fruit that normally make 904 and 890 has been used for the Arana Gran Reserva so this will be the only Gran Reserva made in 2014 – and it is truly delicious! It can be considered a junior 904.

The Arana name was first trademarked in 1974, the wine was named after one of the families that have been at the helm of La Rioja Alta. The wine is only made in high quality vintages. This wine completes a trio of Gran Reservas from Rioja Alta, it’s siblings being the iconic 904 and 890 Gran Reservas.

The blend of the wine has evolved from the original Vina Arana; changing the Mazuelo for Graciano. The Graciano gives the wine an aromatic intensity and acidity, to carry the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo. This great vintage of Vina Arana Gran Reserva comes from 40 year-old vineyards in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno and Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. The grapes are vinified separately in American oak for 3 years, and racked as few times as possible. The wine has excellent aging potential.

96 Points James Suckling:

Lots of mushroom & walnut aromas with plum & leather, too. It’s full-bodied, but very soft & creamy-textured with lots of old wood, mushroom & ripe fruit on the finish. Some chocolate & hazelnut. Complex & gorgeous. Drink or hold.

96 Points Sarah Jane Evans, Decanter:

Arana commemorates one of La Rioja Alta's historic families. The Tempranillo (95%) & Graciano (5%) are aged separately in American oak barrels for three years before blending, then for three years in bottle (two years less than the 904, and six years less than the 890). The winery's keynote to this Rioja is 'freshness'. I agree.
