Spain is a hugely diverse country with wine regions that range from some of the most famous, to others that are underrated & great value.
Seckford has a selection of recommendations for you: there are obvious names like Bodegas Artadi & Cillar de Silos, but also a collection of lesser known wines.
Mas Doiz in Priorat (with vineyards in Poboleda, a village with some of the highest and coolest sites) makes gorgeously wild & herbaceous wines. Bodegas Artadi represents precision winemaking from vineyards at altitude giving freshness to the wines; the Alvara fruit has wonderfully fine-grained tannins.
Finca Villacreces is an exciting Ribera del Duero estate, which is taking its cue from Super Tuscans by using Cabernet in the blend with the traditional grape (in this case Tempranillo). The vineyards border those of world-famous Vega Sicilia – the terroir here is truly excellent yet Finca Villacreces produces some of the best value wines in the region.
All the cases are lying at Seckford Wines.
2012 Rioja Senorio de San Vicente, Sierra Cantabria
£200 per 6 bottles IB
92 Points (Wine Advocate)
The 2012 San Vicente is produced from an extremely dry year. Tasted next to the 2013, there are some candied notes, ripe and with sweet fruit, and also more developed aromas of leather and spices--a style traditional drinkers of this wine will appreciate. The palate is serious, even a little austere with some chalky tannins and a dry finish that would welcome food. This is ready. 60,000 bottles produced.
2010 Valdegines, Artadi
£210 per 6 bottles IB
93 Points (Robert Parker)
The 2010 Valdegines is produced with 100% Tempranillo from a single east-facing, 7-hectare vineyard planted in 1979 in Laguardia at 600 meters altitude in slopes and terraces, which fermented in open wooden vats for 10-12 days and aged in French oak barrel for 14 months. The character of this vineyard is always very fresh, as it does not get sun after 5PM, so it’s always more Atlantic, more floral and on the red fruit side, easy to drink, with laser-like precision and acidity. Drink 2014-2025.
2005 Salanques Priorat, Mas Doix
£195 per 6 bottles Ex VAT
93 Points (Wine Advocate)
The 2005 Salanques, a blend of 65% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, and the balance Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is aged in French oak for 14 months. It has a glass-coating purple-hue with an alluring bouquet of cedar, smoke, slate, blueberry, and black cherry. Youthful and structured on the palate, this potentially complex effort will profit from 5-7 years of additional cellaring. It will be at its best from 2015 to 2030.
2004 Finca Villacreces
£200 per 6 bottles Ex VAT
95 Points (Wine Advocate)
The 2004 Tinto is 86% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Merlot fermented in barrel and aged in French oak for 16 months. Inky purple, it has an expressive bouquet of mocha/espresso, pain grille, graphite, wild blueberrys, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a full-bodied, full-flavored, plush wine with layers of spicy black fruits, impeccable balance, and a long, pure finish. The tannins are well concealed but this superb effort should evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2027.
