Delicious 2019 wines crammed with juicy fruit.
Great News to share with you...Seckford has recently received its second shipment from Jean-Francois Malsert in St Joseph.
We were thrilled by the responses to tasting the wines last May; and we are delighted to offer this extra stock & first releases of Malsert's 2019 wines.
Rustic and in a state of renovation Domaine de L’Iserand is the French “Good Life”: chickens in the yard, donkeys honking. JF’s grandfather grew grapes to eat & sell but the vines were grubbed up by JF’s father. JF started life working in a sports shop, then he owned a wine bar in Tournon but started re-planting vines on his grandfather’s land in 2007, always respecting each site or vineyard with the same colour of grapes if not always the same varieties.
JF sold the wine bar and became a full-time vigneron in 2017. He grows Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier & Gamay, and buys some grapes from local farmers he knows, and those that let him dictate the nurture, vine training and crop levels. All organic, low sulphur, whole bunch wine-making with minimal interference. He uses amphorae and old demi-muids for ageing.
JF is experimenting with his wines, using combinations of barrel & amphora - our tasting notes were littered with the words balance, vibrant, fragrant & delicious.
We may well have found a star in the making: the wines are fresh & intense, and they are really drinkable. These are not expensive wines and are delicious to drink, made with real authenticity & care. These wines are also made in tiny quantities, some 200 cases per cuvee. Grab them now!
2019 Vin de France Alliance
£65 IB/6 OC
A blend of Gamay grown locally around the farm mixed with some organic Carignan fruit bought in from Corbieres. Blended and aged in amphorae. Dark colour and almost like the best crème de cassis but with a great balancing acidity. Spicy finish.
2019 Vin de France Gamay
£75 IB/6 OC
This wine is getting better and better with more time in bottle. This has the same mineral character as a good Moulin a Vent or Cote de Brouilly. A real joy.
2019 Vin de France Maquerelle Syrah
£75 IB/6 OC
Grapes purchased from a friend in Ozon. Darker colour than the Vaches wine, a different character too, more muscular and ‘meaty’ Syrah. Still fruity and a real glugger.
2019 Vin de France Syrah Clos des Vaches
£85 IB/6 OC
From terrassed vineyards in hilltop village of Secheras (overlooking the Vallee de l'Iserand). 30-45 year old vines. Ripe blueberry fruit, spicy & delicious. Intense for a VdF. Delicious.
2018 St Joseph Sabots de Coppi
£115 IB/6 OC
We sold out of our first lot and were please to find some available after a cancelled order from a wine bar in Lyon, it’s been that kind of year for growers. The blueberry character is still present but with some olive and tarragon notes developing with bottle age. Lovely balancing acidity. I think this represents real value for money.
2019 St Joseph Lou Taissou
£110 IB/6 OC
‘Lou Taissou’ is an old French term for badger, the cuvee is so-named for the creatures that harvest a good part of the crop before J-F does. Creamy, bramble-like nose. Really lovely, svelte fruit wine, Intense. Just delicious, with et yhripe blackberry bramble coming through mid-palate. A real ‘drink me’ wine. Pure pleasure.
