The 2016 Pichon Baron is very precise on the nose, mainly black fruit with a touch of cassis and violet, warm brick and light leather scents tucked underneath. Beautiful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, framed by fine tannins, classical in style, nothing out of place, one of the most effortless wines in the flight with a very persistent finish. Bordeaux claret from the top drawer. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants, black plum preserves, truffles, tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits, it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

Tasted blind. Dark purplish crimson. Blackcurrant essence. Solid stuff with a bone-dry finish and fruit and tannin in synch – and without the acidity too dominant. Polished and seductive. A lovely wine with no shortage of obvious alcohol but the whole manages to be delightfully well balanced. (JR)
