Deep garnet in color, the 2016 Gruaud Larose slowly unfurls to offer glimpses at gorgeous scents of black cherries, warm cassis, and lilacs, followed by hints of licorice, dried flowers, and crushed rocks with a touch of cinnamon. The medium-bodied palate is fantastically elegant and refined, with plush tannins to frame the delicate fruit layers, finishing long and seamless.

Savoury, slim, structured, layered, has plenty of longevity in its architecture, firm tannins, grilled peppercorns and raspberry puree, tobacco leaf and cocoa bean, this is so good. 80% new oak for ageing. Georges Pauli, long term technical director, was still overseeing things at the estate, although at this point more from the board of directors. Eric Boissenot consultant.

The 2016 Gruaud Larose has a beautiful nose that is much more pure than the vintages from the noughties. It's well-defined with blackberry, blueberry and crushed violet scents. This is much more floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, supple and poised, with a gentle build in the mouth, but, to use a word I wrote before, there is something sedate about this Gruaud; it doesn’t want to create too much fuss. Lovely. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023.

69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Crimson hue. Still primary and youthful with blueberry and blackcurrant notes. Dense and driven with a depth of fruit and solid tannic frame. Bit more intensity than the 2015 tasted previously. Length and persistence on the finish. Compact and built for ageing. (JL)
