2017 - Reserve Red, Reyneke, Stellenbosch

The 2017 Reserve Red Biodynamic includes 35% whole bunch, matured in 225-liter French barrels. It is opulent and beautifully nuanced on a nose of blueberry, _crème de cassis_, crushed violets and iris that blossoms in the glass. The intense palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, flecks of dark chocolate and espresso and hints of curry leaf and wild fennel. Beautifully defined on the finish. This is a top-notch Syrah that will deserve 3–4 years in bottle.

The 2017 Reserve Red is showing all of the classic expressions of Syrah right now and still has the same mineral and black-fruited core with black pepper as the previous '16 and '15 vintages had. The palate is rigid with a structured dusty core that shows bright blackberries, dark plum and black spices with a tannic backbone. This wine is really good and will age well in the cellar. It is tightly wound, and just needs a little bit of time to come into focus.

Biodynamic. 100% Syrah. Not yet released.Deep purple. Violet and pine scents give a different slant to Syrah than the 2016 tasted alongside, with slate mineral notes, crushed black pepper and subtle meatiness. Great depth to the nose and plenty on the palate too. High, fine tannins, with lots of rich, saline length hint at a Hermitage style and associated need for some cellar time to achieve its full potential. (TJ)
