The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a splendid wine for the vintage. This has a sensual bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, rose petal and, as I wrote before, quintessential Rousseau in style. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and armed with that killer thread of acidity. Vibrant and mineral-driven, it fans out gloriously towards the finish and has a long road ahead of it. Superb.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is turning out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit and plums complemented by hints of smoked meats, preserved citrus, warm spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, it's pretty and fine-boned, with good depth at the core, velvety tannins and a seamless, enveloping profile. This is another cuvée that I suspect will turn out to be Rousseau's finest rendition since at least 2012.

Two-thirds Mazoyères. In the new cuverie being built in 2020 they will keep the Charmes and Mazoyères separate and see how they perform individually. Cask sample. Sumptuous nose marked slightly by oak at this stage. Some raspberry fruit and real energy on the palate. (JR)
