A brilliant English Chardonnay from the garden of England

New Fine Wine

Seckford Wines are delighted to introduce you to our first English wine. The Roman Road vineyard is situated on the sunny, sheltered slopes of the North Downs of Kent. The single vineyard, still white wine is 100% Chardonnay. The fruit grown here benefits from the gentle rolling slopes of Kent and the lime-rich chalk soil. Being part of the same ridge that runs down to Champagne, makes this site utterly perfect in the quest for great Chardonnay.

At harvest, the grapes are carefully selected for their maturity and concentration. The juice undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tank, before ageing for three months in French oak barrels. The Roman Road Chardonnay is elegant and pure, with a distinctive mineral quality and at Seckford we think it is truly fantastic.

A new chapter in English wine making, Simpson Estate are taking the successes we have seen in making brilliant sparkling wine in Britain and focusing on still white wines. Roman Road's reputation is going from strength to strength with The Independent wine section stating ‘Here’s an English chardonnay that can hold its own with the best the Continent and the New World can offer’. Roman Road is made in tiny quantities, around 150 cases a year so allocations are limited.

We were very lucky at Seckford Wines to have been invited down to the estate near Canterbury to see first hand the incredible dedication to growing great Chardonnay that Charles and Ruth are showing. We were blown away by the quality of the Roman Road Chardonnay and would be confident putting it up against Chardonnay's from across the Channel and beyond given the quality.

We can recommend it highly enough, please click here for more details and how to purchase a case for yourself!
