Jean-Marie Fourrier - Brilliant Burgundy
The Domaine sits in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, where he took over from his father in the 1990s after time spent learning from Henri Jayer and Domaine Drouhin.
From the very beginning, Jean-Marie set out with his own vision: old vines, honesty in the vineyard, and a light touch in the cellar. He refuses to follow fashion, choosing instead to focus on balance and allowing the vineyard to speak for itself. The result is Pinot Noir that is perfumed, silky, unmistakably Burgundian, and always a pleasure to drink.
From the more approachable Bourgogne Rouge, a blend of 16 old-vine plots that captures Fourrier’s trademark purity, the range steps up through his village bottlings such as Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes and Chambolle-Musigny, each drawn from venerable parcels and showing extra depth and perfume. Above these sit a handful of Premier Crus – think Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques or Goulots – where the concentration and ageing potential really start to shine. At the summit are the Grands Crus, including the celebrated Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin, wines of profound elegance and longevity that define Fourrier’s reputation as one of Burgundy’s modern masters.
The 2021 release shows everything you would expect from a grower of this calibre, carrying the same hallmarks and craftsmanship found in his most prestigious wines. The cooler vintage brings lifted fragrance, precise red-fruit purity and a fine, elegant structure. We have only a small number of cases available, so it is a vintage to enjoy now or over the next few years.
