The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a serious wine. I vividly remember tasting this red for the first time at the winery shortly after release. Like it did back then, it leaves quite an impression today. The 2010 unwinds in the glass with gorgeous cherry liqueur, raspberry jam, dried lavender, tobacco, cured meat, leather and exotic spice aromas. It is powerful and deep, framed by ripe tannins and a complex finish. Kudos to Paul-Vincent Avril and his team for crafting this ravishing beauty.

The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos des Papes wafts from the glass with a complex and somewhat reductive bouquet of spices, tobacco, dark fruits and licorice. Full-bodied, dense and structured, it remains somewhat closed at this stage, revealing a firm tannic architecture and considerable power that segues into a long, powerful and tobacco-inflected finish. This is perhaps the most powerful wine in this vertical. It comes from a vintage where the year seems to speak more loudly than the terroir, though one suspects that balance will shift in time.

Tasted blind. Liquorice, aniseed, dark chocolate, black fruit. Ripe, modern, edged with a bit of mint and herbs. Acid seems a bit high though. (RH)
