Voerzio's 2012 Barolo Sarmassa is round, sensual and inviting. Silky tannins and a sheen of new oak give the Sarmassa much of its racy, voluptuous personality. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and new leather flesh out in a succulent, forward Barolo that should drink well with minimal cellaring. Today, the new oak is a bit pronounced, but that should sort itself out with more time in bottle.

This wine is only ever released in magnums. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Closed on the fruit, which makes the oak look a little upfront, but with aeration, plenty of minerality and salty hints come to the fore. The more air this gets the more intriguing and complex it becomes. Tight and compact palate of almost pure redcurrant fruit and massive but fine tannins. Overall lightness of touch. (WS)
