Oh this one is good, just as with the Lynch Bages 2014, this is a storming example of the vintage. Full of crayon, slate, still on the closed side, showcasing the way that Pauillac asks you to slow things down. Love the black truffle, blackberry, cassis, leather, espresso, wet stones, with a mouthwatering finish. Classically balanced, and tthis vintage saw the introduction of a 2nd wine. Harvest September 25 to October 6. 55% new oak for ageing, Denis Dubourdieu consultant., Philippe Casteja owner.

The 2014 Batailley has an attractive bouquet, lilting scents of redcurrant and raspberry coulis, quite floral and very precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good depth and body, rounded for Batailley and less austere than usual. It feels closed towards the finish, tight-lipped, but there is certainly grip and presence here. It will require several years in bottle before it can show its true potential, but there is a sense of class to this Batailley that I suspect will become more evident with maturity. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2014 Batailley has a backward nose, black fruit, dried blood and white pepper (like before); it is very classic in style, but I would have liked a bit more brightness and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, just a soupçon of greenness towards the finish. It's a decent Batailley, but the quality improved significantly after this vintage. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Deep smudgy garnet. Lifted leafy black fruit. Very leafy, even minty. On the palate, that leafiness becomes a lean impression, the tannins then rather dry on the finish. Starts well but runs out of fruit at the end. (JH)
