Lovely this wine, and it delivers again in 2016. Understated, restrained and utterly delicious, limestone character, dark berry fruit, cold ash, graphite, elderflower, bilberry, salted cracker, saffron, 60% new oak for ageing.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pavie Macquin charges out of the glass with gregarious black cherries, warm blackberries and wild blueberries scents followed up by loads of red roses, baking spices, cedar chest and unsmoked cigars sparks plus a waft of wild thyme. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, revealing layer upon layer of cherries and berries flavors and tons of savory nuances, framed by firm yet exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing very long.

The 2016 Pavie Macquin was tasted on two occasions. The bottle at Farr showed signs of oxidation and was not scored. The one at Bordeaux Index’s correlated more closely to previous assessments. It had more delineation and precision compared to the Pavie, very mineral-driven, bright and lively. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, gentle grip, silky smooth, with a precise and delineated, black pepper-tinged finish that is a delight. However, I must add a cautionary question mark to my score because of variation from bottle to bottle.

Tasted blind. Pretty smart lusciousness on the nose – concentration without exaggeration. Then a savoury coolness. Dry finish but promising. Bit edgy – quite marked acidity. (JR)

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
