This bottle of 1989 Climens replicates the stunning showing at the château the previous year. Yellow plum and saffron soars on the electrifying nose, just breathtaking delineation and vibrancy. The palate is likewise brimming over with energy, very intense yet brilliantly poised with a purity on the finish that I feel that Climens rarely achieved in that era. Killer. Tasted at the 1989 Bordeaux dinner at 67 Pall Mall.

The 1989 Climens is medium amber-gold in color. It opens with fantastically fragrant saffron, jasmine tea, chamomile, and preserved lemons notes, plus suggestions of tobacco leaf, dried mandarin peel, and candied ginger. The palate is atomic, exploding in the mouth with profound citrus and spice layers, finishing with fantastic length and freshness. The residual sugar is 126 grams per liter.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
