The 2016 Guiraud has a pale lemon color and opens with musk perfume, paraffin, cedar and spice box notes with a core of lemon tart, honey-drizzled white peaches and kumquat plus a waft of quince paste. The palate has beautiful vibrancy and loads of lively tropical and spicy layers, finishing very long.

The 2016 Guiraud replicates its blind showing at the Southwold tasting. It bursts out of the glass with copious dried honey and lanolin scents, a slightly more pronounced saffron scent emerging in this bottle. The palate is weighty with vibrant acidity, stem ginger infusing the honeyed fruit. Tangy marmalade dabbles with quince towards the satisfying finish. This is a great ten-year-old Sauternes with many years ahead. There is 106 g/L residual sugar.

Sauternes

Sauternes, a renowned Bordeaux appellation in the Graves region, is famous for its luxurious sweet white wines made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This fungus concentrates sugars, creating wines with rich sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Sauternes wines feature complex aromas and flavours of apricot, honey, peach, citrus, and vanilla, with excellent ageing potential. Top producers include Château d'Yquem, Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut, and Château Coutet.
