The 2009 Clos Haut-Peyraguey has a pale to medium gold color and nose of dried tropical fruit, praline, ginger, beeswax and honey. Maturing, it is rich, lively and savory in the mouth with a stewed tea finish.

The 2009 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is rich and more mature on the nose compared to its peers, without quite the same definition. The palate is viscous on the entry with a lot of botrytis. A rather rich and decadent Sauternes with a touch of bitterness on the finish. This affirms its middling performance six years ago. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Bernard Magrez’s name is mentioned seven times on the labels – plus his photograph. Tasted blind. Deep orangey gold. Very cheesey nose. Then very sweet, rather soft and floral palate. Not quite refreshing enough. (JR)

Sauternes Fine Wine

Sauternes

Sauternes, a renowned Bordeaux appellation in the Graves region, is famous for its luxurious sweet white wines made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This fungus concentrates sugars, creating wines with rich sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Sauternes wines feature complex aromas and flavours of apricot, honey, peach, citrus, and vanilla, with excellent ageing potential. Top producers include Château d'Yquem, Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut, and Château Coutet.
