Robert Parker Wine Advocate William Kelley - 15 Oct 20
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets reveals scents of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices framed by a generous application of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with tangy acids and an abundance of chalky tannin underpinned its deep core of fruit, this is unusually structured this year and will require patience.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is more opulent on the nose compared to the Clos de Verseuil with candied orange peel infusing the vivid red cherries and crushed strawberries. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry, quite a bold Caillerets with a "thickly-textured" grippy finish. Maybe the Clos de Verseuil possesses more finesse and exhibits greater terroir expression.

Bright mid crimson. More peppery and spicy than the Santenots. The fruit smells fresher as if there were some whole-bunch component here. Very different style too, tighter and more vibrant and much more Pinot though still ripe, rich and packed with fruit intensity. Firm and smooth but dense tannins. I think this will age even longer than the Santenots. (JH)

Volnay Fine Wine

Volnay

Volnay, in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, is famed for elegant, refined Pinot Noir wines with silky texture, aromatic complexity, and graceful ageing potential. These wines feature delicate flavours of red berries, like cherry and raspberry, with floral notes and subtle earth and spice. Though lacking Grand Cru vineyards, Premier Crus like Les Caillerets and Clos des Chênes are highly esteemed for their finesse and depth. Top producers include Domaine Michel Lafarge, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, and Domaine Hubert de Montille, all dedicated to expressing Volnay's unique terroir.
