The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, bursting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, orange rind, spices, black truffle, espresso roast and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and mouthfilling, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, around 85% whole clusters, has a tightly wound, damp earth bouquet that is well defined. The medium-bodied palate is masculine and structured, quite broody and surprisingly introspective. I don’t quite detect the charm in this Charmes, but maybe it was just not showing on the day.

75% stems. Turned into one of the more ‘brawny and large-scale wines in the cellar’, according to Jeremy Seysses. Barrel sample. A touch of smoky/toasty reduction. Intense, with dark and red fruit together. Spicy too. Chewy, rich and powerful even with a scented mid palate. A lot of character. Needs more time but it has glorious fresh length. (JH)
