Excellent quality, vibrant gold colour, sharp citrus, pineapple, mango and lime zest acidities, opulent and silk-strewn texture that closes in and grips through the finish, finishing with a mint leaf signoff. Accomplished and enjoyable, mouthwatering and tightrope walking. Jean de Roquefeuil technical director (now left for DBR's Languedoc estate Aussières), Ondine Sanfins viticulturalist creating a library of vines for massal selection. Revealing a fruity, energetic bouquet, the 2021 Rieussec, a blend of 91% Sémillon and 9% Sauvignon Blanc, is a great performance in Sauternes. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, it’s perfectly balanced with a fleshy core of fruit and a mineral, saline finish.

The 2021 Rieussec doesn't quite deliver the complexity one expects on the nose. Clean and pure, it displays yellow plum, acacia honey and a hint of apricot, but it needs more delineation and energy. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. There's a bit of new oak here, but it is seductively smooth with fine acidity and a caressing, honeyed finish. This is not bad at all, though I would like to see the aromatics up their game.

Tasted blind. Charming and well balanced. Pungent with real drive. Unselfconsciously great. Spicy. (JR)

Sauternes Fine Wine

Sauternes

Sauternes, a renowned Bordeaux appellation in the Graves region, is famous for its luxurious sweet white wines made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This fungus concentrates sugars, creating wines with rich sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. Sauternes wines feature complex aromas and flavours of apricot, honey, peach, citrus, and vanilla, with excellent ageing potential. Top producers include Château d'Yquem, Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut, and Château Coutet.
