1959 - Coutet, Barsac

I expected more from the Château Coutet 1959, especially given how stellar the Suduiraut 1959 performed in 2009. I suspect that its young vines stymied potential quality, having been decimated by the winter freeze three years earlier. It has an almost unnatural, limpid amber hue, and I remark that it looks as if someone had added some dye! The nose echoes the 1948, albeit with less intensity, and I find the chlorophyll element stronger. The palate is citric and less complex than anticipated, exhibiting dryness towards the finish. Perhaps the young vines, replanted after the 1956 freeze, hampered complexity this year vis-à-vis other estates as their soils are particularly cold.
