Vinous Neal Martin - 01 Jul 18
The 1955 Latour, which came directly from the Mähler-Besse cellar, took some time to settle on the nose, showing a bit of funk at first and then revealing vivacious red berry fruit, graphite, juniper and dried orange peel. This is wondrously detailed and demonstrates more presence than the 1953 Latour, gaining intensity and confidence with aeration. The palate is simply divine: luscious and pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, filigree tannin, perfectly judged acidity and a harmonious, exquisitely structured finish that bears some similarity to the outstanding 1949. This is classic and sophisticated Château Latour that will give many more years of pleasure. Tasted at the Latour dinner in Hong Kong.
