Denis Bachelet's superb 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes opens in the glass with a deep nose of crunchy cassis, red cherry and rose petal, mingling with bass notes of rich soil, espresso roast and grilled meat. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and complete, with excellent concentration, succulent acids and rich structuring tannins. Bachelet's Vieilles Vignes bottling always rewards cellaring, and that will be especially true of this 2015.

Dark red with ruby tones. Slightly porty aromas of plum, dark raspberry and spices; just this side of too much. Sweet and plush on the palate, with its red and darker fruit flavors complicated by spices and earth. Every bit as accessible as the Côte de Nuits-Villages today owing to its smooth tannins, but this wine has more stuffing. Incidentally, all of the Bachelet '15s were bottled with between 12.5% and 13% alcohol, following a bit of chaptalization to prolong their fermentations.

80-year-old vines on a total of 1.5 ha. 'We look after them with love and passion.' They replant 1% a year. ‘Repiquage.’ Lots there! Fine and rewarding even if not that dense. Not a fruit bomb but very digestible. (JR)

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin, a prestigious Burgundy appellation in Côte de Nuits, is renowned for producing powerful Pinot Noir wines, often called the "King of Burgundy." These wines are known for bold flavours, complex aromas of dark cherries, blackcurrants, truffles, and spices, with robust structure and excellent ageing potential. The appellation includes nine Grand Cru vineyards, notably Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. Top producers like Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Fourrier, and Domaine Denis Mortet craft wines that reflect the unique terroir and tradition of Gevrey-Chambertin.
