Ripe red fruits, good lift and concentration even at close to 30 years old. Cigar box, black tea, soy, smoked earth, mushroom, campfire and black truffle, great quality if a little less mouthwatering than the 1986, more angular at this point with plenty of life ahead of it. An excellent vintage in the Médoc that is coming into its own at the moment. Philippe Blanc's first year at Beychevelle.

Made from 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 1996 Beychevelle is deep brick in color. It gallops out with notions of sweaty leather, stewed black plums, fig paste, and cigar box with touches of rusty nails and dusty soil. Medium-bodied, the palate has a tart line of acidity and chewy tannins framing the dried berries and mineral layers, finishing a touch rustic. Drink up!
