A blend of 95% Grenache Noir and 5% Mourvèdre, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres is less immediately expressive than the 2018, sharing the denser, more tannic architecture of the 2016 vintage, with darker notes of licorice and gentian on the nose. Full-bodied and structured, it's not a particularly solar wine, yet it possesses contained power and genuine freshness on the finish that sets it apart. This is a wine where the palate speaks more eloquently than the nose.

Vivid ruby-red. Highly perfumed red and blue fruit and floral pastille aromas are complemented by Asian spices and smoky mineral flourishes. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering sweet cherry and raspberry liqueur flavors that become deeper and spicier as the wine opens up. Shows impressive power and breadth on a very long, floral-accented finish shaped by supple, harmonious tannins.
