Robert Parker Wine Advocate Joe Czerwinski - 31 Aug 18
A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Maryline comes from a small parcel in la Crau. Fermented in oak and aged in foudre, it hints at cedar, vanilla and espresso, but it also offers plenty of ripe, dark fruit to balance out any oak. Full-bodied and plush, it delivers layers of rich mocha goodness, underscored by a long, long finish. Just give it a couple of years in the cellar before pulling a cork.

Bright-rimmed ruby. Assertive aromas of red berry liqueur, candied cherry and potpourri are complemented by exotic spice and mineral flourishes. Supple and appealingly sweet, offering palate-staining raspberry, kirsch and floral pastille flavors along with a hint of licorice. Finishes impressively long and seamless; velvety tannins build slowly and add gentle grip.

90% Grenache, 10% others. Cask sample. Violet, black cherry, leather and aniseed on the palate, high but super-fine tannic texture. The palate finishes slightly dilute, with the tannin dominating the structure. (RH)
