The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows more reduction than its peers but underneath there is ample red fruit and a sense of terroir; it just requires time. The palate is medium-bodied with light but pliant tannins, a pretty Gevrey that exudes purity and finesse. Harmonious, poised and minerally on the finish, this is not a showstopper by any means yet there is sophistication from start to finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Domaine-owned vines from a parcel planted mostly in 1947. 100% destemmed fruit, 100% new oak. Cask sample.Very pale ruby. Red cherries and strawberries. Sweet fruit on the palate. No forceful tannins but there is concentration. This is pure essence rather than the opulence of the 2020s. Long haul? Will be rather beautiful soon. (MH)

Gevrey-Chambertin Fine Wine

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin, a prestigious Burgundy appellation in Côte de Nuits, is renowned for producing powerful Pinot Noir wines, often called the "King of Burgundy." These wines are known for bold flavours, complex aromas of dark cherries, blackcurrants, truffles, and spices, with robust structure and excellent ageing potential. The appellation includes nine Grand Cru vineyards, notably Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. Top producers like Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Fourrier, and Domaine Denis Mortet craft wines that reflect the unique terroir and tradition of Gevrey-Chambertin.
