Ginestra is the first name that comes to mind when thinking about the Eastern slopes of Monteforte d’Alba. A tongue of the hillside as majestic as it is elegant and from which, over the past thirty years, have issued forth some of the wines which have made the story of the Barolo appellation.

Diego Conterno has been making wine on his own in Monforte d’Alba since 2003. His estate comprises 7.5 hectares, 2 of which are in the ‘Grand Cru’ site Ginestra, the ‘Sori’ (full south) heart of which faces plum south at right angles to the sun & was planted in 1982. He was joined in 2010 by his son Stefano. The winemaking here is very traditional: static fermenters and ever larger barrels (botte grande) for maturation.

Monforte is known for wines of depth, structure and length, but the painstaking care taken in the vineyard, and gentle winemaking, bring out the elegance of the terroir.

Ginestra is a huge vineyard of over 100 hectares, but Conterno have some of the best bits, comprising poorer grey soils where grapes ripen later than in the rest of the commune. This is another transparent, linear wine, perfumed and fresh, with much more depth and texture than the regular Barolo. The red fruit is cool and crunchy, with notes of smoke and rose petals, and there is a clear mineral spine, very smooth elegant tannins and a long fruity finish.

A perfectly pitched wine of elegance and density, with pure delicate cherry fruit and a cool racy freshness. It is seamless, effortless and very long.

Monforte d’Alba. Tasted blind. Healthy mid ruby with brooding depth. Very compact, yet with huge depth on the palate. Richly tannic and compelling finish. Great stuff but far from ready. (WS)
Drink: 2020 – 2040

Former co-owner of Conterno-Fantino, Diego Conterno, established his own estate in 2002. His Ginestra bottling comes from two small parcels in this Monforte d'Alba cru, which spends six months in 500 litre tonneau and 12 months in botti. It offers an ensemble of balsam, wildflowers, sage, mint, meaty hints and lingering tobacco. It is muscular without being heavy or forced. Keep an eye on this property.
Drink: 2020 - 2038

Total maceration time of 20 days on the skins and aged for 18 rather than 24 months in 50 hl large Stockinger cask of Slavonian oak to prevent too much impact of the oak as the cask was bought recently. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite subdued and really youthful on the nose. Cherry, raspberry and iron. Very linear and energetic acidity and intense powdery clinging tannins. Noble, austere and long. (WS)
Drink: 2018 – 2026

The 2014 Barolo Ginestra offers a bit more depth and overall structure than the straight Barolo, even if it remains a bit rough around the edges. The 2014 may not have enough fruit to drink well for more than a handful of years, although it is quite expressive and intriguing today. On the other hand, if the tannins soften, the 2014 could turn out to be even better than this note suggests.

Monforte d’Alba. Bottled in August. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Subtle oak underneath lifted, peppery cherry fruit of great appeal and with a touch of cinnamon. Very suave yet with substance and with polished tannins adding richness to the finish and fantastically balanced by ripe acidity. Long-lasting tannins and juicy fruit. (WS)
Drink: 2020 – 2030

The 2015 Barolo Ginestra melds together the breadth of Ginestra with some of the soft fruit for this site, all while retaining a very classic sense of structure. Sweet red cherry, mint, pine, orange peel, star anise and dried herbs give the 2015 lovely brightness and fragrance to play off its mid-weight structure.
Drink: 2020 - 2030
