Domaine Lamarche
A Fantastic Collection of Burgundy from Domaine Lamarche
Domaine François Lamarche (Domaine Nicole Lamarche from 2018) is a Burgundy producer based in the commune of Vosne-Romanée. It is best known for its grand cru holdings in Clos de Vougeot, Grands Échezeaux, Échezeaux and the special monopole La Grande Rue, which was awarded grand cru status in 1992.
Since 1797 the prestigious terroirs of Vosne-Romanee and Vougeot have provided Domaine Lamarche with their precious fruit. Their goal is to express both their terroir and history in each wine. Regardless of where the wines originate, the one thing that links them all is elegance with exceptional balance and a delicate nose.
Following his passing in 2013, François Lamarche was succeeded by his daughter Nicole and niece Nathalie; Nicole is today in charge of winemaking and Nathalie, the marketing side. Meticulous work in the vineyards, careful barrel selection and a new cuverie have all combined to make this a fine and consistent domaine.

Neal Martin (Vinous.com):
Their crown jewel is the La Grande Rue monopole that runs parallel to Romanée-Conti and La Romanée. About four or five years ago, they began to create less rustic, very pure, seamless and elegant wines. This uptick in quality is in no small part thanks to winemaker Nicole Lamarche. She is quite a character, with a quiff that Morrissey would approve of. Most importantly, she is clearly a talented winemaker who has refined the style of the domaine’s wines. “We started the harvest on September 7 and finished around September 14,” she told me in her tasting room, log fire crackling by the table. “We stopped for half a day because of the rain. We were not touched by the frost and it was dry, but that was no problem for the vines. The yields were around 40hl/ha. A couple of vineyards were impacted by the frost from last year, such as the Les Suchots and Premier Crus in Nuits Saint-Georges [implying that the vines responded more generously in terms of yield in 2017]. The vinification was normal, though I’m always careful with pressing, as I don’t want bad tannins. I used 30% whole bunches for all the cuvées.” This is quite an interesting approach. In contrast with, say, Charles Lachaux, who varies the addition of whole bunch for each cru, Lamarche aims to maintain the same percentage so that nuances are attributed to the terroir rather than differences in stems. Of course, there is always a lot of focus upon La Grande Rue. Since the 2014 vintage, there have been two cuvées, the regular one and a Cuvée 1959 that comes exclusively from a plot of vines exchanged with Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to complete the monopole of La Tâche. It is amazing how the two differ in terms of style, the Cuvée 1959 a little darker and more structured, though quality-wise, this year they are similar. There is also an excellent Grands-Echézeaux and a raft of Premier Crus orbiting Vosne-Romanée that are understated and satiny-textured. They tend to be wines that do not exhibit as much substance and grip as say, Cathiard or Anne Gros. These are stylistically more airy and transparent, not unlike Mugneret-Gibourg just a couple of houses away.
