Boursot Père & Fils

Domaine Boursot in Chambolle Musigny is a small family-run producer making brilliantly crafted red Burgundy. The history of the Boursot family dates back to at least 1550, with Guillaume Boursot who was a grape grower. He generated a lineage in Chambolle, all vignerons from father to son.

Neal Martin recently published a selection of 'under the radar' Burgundy growers he thinks are going places and Boursot is on the list! Boursot has a very small production - only a barrel of each of their top wines. Seckford is the only merchant representing them in Europe and we really love their wines!

A very old Domaine, the family have been growing grapes in Chambolle since 1550, but it came to our attention when the new generation, brothers Romaric (pictured) & Romuald took over in 2013. They have radically changed the work both in the vineyard and the cellar and these changes came really started to show from the 2014 vintage.

Boursot has recently moved to a newly constructed warehouse with all of their equipment in one place, including the winery and a labelling area. All of the wine is transferred from barrel to tank at the same time. New wine goes into the barrel instantly after transferring out the previous one. The wines are then kept in tanks for 2-3 weeks before bottling.

In 2019, Boursot began to vinify their Savigny without sulphites and in 2020, they vinified 4 appellations without. (They then however add 5mg of sulphites after malolactic fermentation – under the threshold for stating their inclusion).

Boursot believe that their customers want wine that they can drink early, therefore their style is made to be approachable when young. However, Boursot themselves hold the village wines for 18-20 years before reaching their ideal point of maturation. The whole Boursot range shares the same overall style.

Their Bourgogne PN is fermented in stainless steel, while the rest of the wines are fermented in 25-30% new oak. They use carefully selected barrels to make sure they get the right levels. All of the 2020s were bottled at the end of October.

The Vintage

2020 has an amazing dark purple colour and is fresh & fruity because it was harvested early. There used to be ban des vendanges which indicated the exact dates when you could harvest grapes, however this recently changed and the harvesting window is just based on the sugar levels in the grapes. Boursot used 30% whole bunch and 70% completely destemmed in 2020 and vinification finished at the start of September.

Cotes de Nuits Villages
£120 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Made from purchased grapes from same plot and grower since 1999 and bottled early to keep maximum fruit. This is from a plot next to Mugnier's Clos de la Maréchal Monopole.

Bright cherries and red fruits on the nose - sweet and ripe. A touch of spice and florality in the background. Bottled early not to be overly oaked. Spice with a creamy texture and robust flavours of cherry and sweet raspberry on the finish.

Gevrey-Chambertin
£220 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

The vines for this wine are in Brochon on the Northern side of Gevrey. Aged 14 months in barrels with 40% new oak.

Deep Purple! Beautiful colour. Intense sweet cherries and a touch of spice on the nose. Showing minerality and freshness, with cassis & cherry. Perfect balance, creaminess, fresh berries, but rich at the same time. A Gevrey produced by someone from Chambolle!

Chambolle-Musigny Les Nazoires
£246 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

0,25 hectares of this small lieu-dit which touches Vougeot, 45 to 50 year old vines. Aged in barrel for 14 months with 30% new oak.

Damson on the nose with the palate showing the now tell-tale signature of Boursot in 2020: the concentration of gorgeous fruit & refined elegance beautifully balanced with the savoury tannins on the finish. Very good indeed. Lovely bright fruit, great finesse and superb complexity.

Vosne-Romanée
£285 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

With Grands Crus such as Richebourg, Romanée Saint-Vivant and La Romanée Conti, the vineyards of Vosne-Romanée produce wines of quality and renown. From vines over 75 years old, this wine is a tribute to its terroir. Aged 14 months in barrels with 50% new oak. Only 600 bottles produced.

Beautiful colour. Soft and delicate on the nose. Not as intense, but very pretty. Beautiful structure and acidity. Spice, fades through to bright ripe cherries and raspberries and almost a chocolate/coffee note at the end with some floral violets.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Lavrottes
£395 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Located below the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, Les Lavrottes is among the smallest premier crus of Chambolle-Musigny, but also among the finest and most delicate. The pink and red fruits are expressed with great elegance and a touch of minerality. The production amounts to only 450 bottles.

Lovely deep ruby. Delicate and perfumed aromas of cherry with a touch of spice - soft and rounded. Sweet, pretty cranberries and raspberries, beautiful balance. Velvety tannins and succulent fruit. Drink early even? Very good.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots
£395 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

This plot has less sunlight because it is located in a hollow. However, it benefits from the heat and humidity that flows to the bottom of this depression during the summer, making it a more robust vine. The resulting wine is powerful &structured and combines the aromas of candied black fruits, leather and spices. Vine age an average of 50 years.

Complex, but delicate on the nose. Lots of cherry with violets, roses and a touch of spice. Creamy red fruits on the palate with winter spice - lovely. Lots of fruit coming through, balanced acidity & tannins. Elegant and refined. So soft and already approachable. Depth and intensity - delicious!

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru V.V. Les Fuées
£430 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Among the most prestigious premiers crus, alongside Charmes and Amoureuses, Les Fuées is ideally located on the top of the slope, a stone’s throw from the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. The plot is surrounded by Mugnier and is at a GC level. From vines over 75 years old, this jewel gets special attention in order to highlight this Climat and produce a wine of a very high quality. It combines power and finesse, structure and delicacy, all with balance and complexity.

Slightly darker on the nose and more intense. Black cherry, a touch of redcurrant and minerality. Beautiful and creamy palate, with excellent structure and fine tannins. Cherry very clear, maybe a little tobacco too and crisp red berries. Elegance and lots of potential - will only get better. Lovely lengthy finish. The harmony is just wonderful.
