Australia
Easily the most recognised of the New World regions on the UK market. Gone, thank goodness, are the heavy over-oaked Chardonnay's and 16% behemoths made from Shiraz. The culture is now much more terroir driven and the cooler climates of Coonawara and Clare Valley are coming to the fore. Shiraz is still king in Australia, but a younger generation are showing signs that the the wines are becoming more elegant and thoughtful.
