Pauillac
Pauillac is the beating heart of the Medoc, with three of the five Premier Grand Cru Classe Chateaux belonging to it. Centred between St Estephe in the north and St Julien to the south, the gravel croupes are at their most formidable in Pauillac, but the clay content of the soil makes it a great commune for both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines produced her are amongst the most sought after in the world and combine the classical Bordeaux style of St Julien with the power of St Estephe. The obvious First Growths of Ch.’s. Latour, Mouton and Lafite are the leading examples but the emergence of the ‘flying fifths’ Ch. Pontet Canet & Ch. Lynch Bages add to the reputation of Pauillac.
