Domaine Joannet
Joannet is a small Domaine based in Marey-lès-Fussey, up in the rolling hills between Pernand-Vergelesses & Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Fabien Joannet is the new generation now running this property and has upgraded his equipment and lowered yields. Lovely wines, silky and vibrant but only small quantities are made.

Fabien is very focused on allowing the natural qualities of the terroir to shine through in his wines. Strict organic practices in the vineyard are adhered to and biological activity is purposely encouraged. Fabien explains that this helps the sensory profile of his wines.

All of Joannet’s Villages and Premier Cru wines are harvested by hand. In the cellars, the reds are aged for 12 months. The wines are then lightly fined and bottled under DIAM cork.

Joannet is a terrific grower, with fantastic vineyards sites including Les Suchots in Vosne-Romanée. We can’t recommend them highly enough.

With Burgundy becoming ever more popular and a string of vintages that have been small crops, prices have been creeping up. Good value Burgundy is starting to become harder to find - you'll certainly find it here.

“We are quite young,” Fabien explains “We formed in 1995. We had a large farm with cereals and animals and so forth. We inherited parcels in Vosne-Romanée from my mother’s side whilst those in the Hautes-Côtes and Pernand-Vergelesses come from my father. My grandfather was Jacques Cacheux [a producer in Vosne-Romanée now run by his son Pascal.] The domaine owns 21 hectares in total. Consumers are now looking for more affordable wines so I have always been attracted to the Hautes-Côtes.”

The Vintage

Fabien says the 2020 vintage was atypical - it was easy and early, but a small quantity. It represents a continuation of the more recent vintages - 2018 and 2019. The fresh notes of 18 are present, but with the warm aromas of 19. The harvest was in August and very early, resulting in small, very concentrated berries.

Hautes Cotes de Nuits Blanc
£72 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

No new oak. Apples and limes on the nose with creamy spice. Ripe fruit on the palate with refreshing acidity - quite lively.  Pear, baked apples, butterscotch - soft, approachable and ready to go! Fantastic value for money.

Pernand Vergelesses Blanc
£110 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Slightly richer than the Hautes Cotes. Limes and apples on the nose. Great limey acidity with some tart apples on the palate, and a touch of stone fruit.
Notes of almond and spice, with a streak of minerality. Lovely balance.

Bourgogne Les Champs D'Argent
£68 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

This is a regional appellation that can be harvested from almost anywhere in Burgundy. This particular wine however comes from the terroir of Vosne-Romanée.

Very bright on the nose with cherries, redcurrants and a hint of spices. Crunchy on the palate with pepper & spice. Well structured with balanced acidity. Will need time, but very moreish already. Quite creamy texture.

Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Fichots
£145 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Les Fichots is a Premier Cru site just south of Pernand-Vergelesses in the Cote de Beaune. The vineyard lies below the Corton Grand Cru, with which it shares its limestone soils. Les Fichots is situated at the bottom of the valley and is therefore almost completely flat, but despite this it has plenty of exposure to sunlight and isn't affected by cold winds due to the two hills on either side.

50% new oak. Beautiful ripe berries on the nose, much more than the villages. Subtle spices too. Sweet concentrated attack with plenty of charming red fruits, ripe and juicy. Good tannic structure and acidity. Lots of finesse and elegance. Very soft.

Vosne Romanée
£220 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Vosne-Romanée is a small commune in the Côte de Nuits on the Route des Grands Crus in Burgundy. The producers in Vosne-Romanée make some of the most famous wines in Burgundy in the Romanée appellation, including the prestigious Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Bright, sweet red fruits and cherries shine on the nose with a beautiful dark ruby colour. Very elegant on the palate - sweet raspberries with pepper and floral notes in the background. Crisp acidity, silky tannins and a velvety texture. All of the components and lots of potential!

Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots
£450 per 6 x 75cl IB pre-arrival late 2022

Les Suchots is the largest Premier Cru climat in the Vosne-Romanée appellation. This vineyard separates the Echezeaux and Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru sites and, like its prestigious neighbours, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Les Suchots regularly produces exceptional Premier Cru wines with a raft of top producers owning plots.

Beautiful ripe berries on the nose - with a touch of marzipan. Quite intense cherries. Delicious sweet fruit on the palate with great depth and balance. Notes of peppery spice and butterscotch. Ripe tannins and a lovely texture. Soft, with creamy, aromatic cherries on the finish and a hint of almond.

This vineyard is surrounded by the most famous Grands Crus in the world. Here, Pinot Noir is king.

Sometimes, Les Suchots can exceed certain neighbouring Grands Crus!
