There is little doubt that the commune of Chavignol can be informally considered to be a (or even the) grand cru of Sancerre. If we add the wine-making skills of Francois Cotat to the equation we then have one of the finest exponents of ageworthy sauvignon blanc. Wonderful wines are produced by Francois and they remain highly recommended.
Describing 2018 as a 'miracle vintage' Francois Cotat is extremely happy with his wines - and we couldn't agree more!
Warm weather and good yields have made 2018 a vintage that is rich with gorgeous texture; it will age beautifully in the cellar.

2018 Sancerre, Les Caillottes
£125 per six in bond.
A wine made from François’ younger vines (now 15-years-old) planted on four different parcels on limestone soil. This cuvée seems to grow in complexity and density every year, the vines giving more as they mature. There is around 1g/l of residual sugar, adding to the feeling of richness, density, power and warmth. Rich and rounded with some yellow stone fruit flavours, there is a subtle mineral acidity behind and a twist of dry extract to the finish that adds further to the feeling of freshness. Drink 2019-2024

2018 Sancerre, Les Monts Damnes
£165 per six in bond.
As ever, the nose of the Monts Damnés offers real refinement, purity and intensity, with some floral top notes. The palate is initially rich, with 3g/l residual sugar and a real feeling of density and viscosity, but then the classic Monts Damnés minerality kicks in; the wine is fine, elegant and chalky with an intense freshness that leaves a clean and energetic finish. Drink 2020-2026.

2018 Sancerre, Les Culs de Beaujeu
£165 per six in bond.
A vineyard with deep clay soil, and Cotat’s oldest vines, planted almost 50 years ago. This feels a little behind the other wines in its development, needing more time before it will express itself fully. Rich, powerful and brooding with some touches of cream and a thick, oily texture. There is a brooding power here, masses of complexity and a long finish, but one feels there is more to come. Drink 2021-2030.
