The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve from Clos du Caillou wafts from the glass with a complex bouquet of fresh licorice, dry thyme, garrigue and spices. Full-bodied, dense and elegant, it's focused and crystalline, with contained power, a beautiful tannic structure, mentholated freshness and a long, ethereal finish of breathtaking tension. This is a superb bottle at its peak.

The full-bodied 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve bursts with intense tobacco, forest floor, dried red fruit, lavender and black olive aromas. Licorice and garrigue add spicy complexities. Framed by ripe and perfectly integrated tannins, the delicious 2010 delivers a long and powerful finish and maintains balancing freshness throughout. This is a majestic La Réserve built for the long haul.

If anything slightly more transparent than Les Quartz from the same producer. Another cask sample. Light rim. Very fragrant yet spicy. Tastes very strongly of Mourvèdre with that gamey/animal/oily metal combination. It is certainly a novelty and very brooding and dry on the end but I actually think I personally prefer the lift of the Quartz – even if it is a bit sweeter and more mainstream for the appellation. But this is serious, very thick stuff with more than a hint of dried prunes and is very good wine. (JR)
