2012 - Barolo Cascina Nuova, Elvio Cogno

The 2012 Barolo Cascina Nuova is striking for its aromatic lift and overall palate presence. Freshly cut flowers, hard candy, sweet red berries, mint, spices and white pepper are some of the signatures. Delicate and sensual throughout, the 2012 offers gorgeous complexity to match its deceptively understated personality. This is a gorgeous Barolo from Elvio Cogno. The 2012 spent 24 months in cask.

The 2012 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a good wine, but is slightly compromised by the adverse vintage conditions. For this reason, I am suggesting a shorter drinking window. There is power and voice in the bouquet, but the assembly is not as precise in this warm vintage. Bold cherry, spice and leather are presented in one bold front. A few years of bottle aging should help consolidate this wine.

Novello. From young vines. Total of 38-40 days on the skins. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks of 25-50 hl. Bottled with Diam: ‘I do not have any bottle variation anymore, because there is less air ingression’.Lustrous, mid ruby with orange tinges. Sleek nose of fresh red currant and raspberry, with a hint of cumin. Super-elegant lithe palate, but with a pretty impressive, chewy structure. Long and finely perfumed finish that is more than a little gripping, but it needs more time too. A burgundian Barolo. (WS)
