The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is rich and intense, with black cherries complemented by autumnal spice, dried orange peels and a smoky whiff of camphor. It races across the palate, displaying an unexpectedly zesty expression, as masses of tart berries and hints of citrus are enlivened by zesty acidity. The 2012 keeps the energy high throughout, only lightly tannic yet potent, and leaves nuances of cranberry, clove and a bitter hint of dark, dark chocolate to slowly taper off. I have fond memories of tasting this upon release, and am overjoyed to see just how well the 2012 Piaggione has matured.
